The Microsoft Software & Systems Academy (MSSA) is a ground-breaking program that builds upon the talent and experience of military veterans to help meet our nation’s critical need for IT professionals. MSSA is designed for active duty service members who are transitioning from the military to the civilian sector. The program provides specialized training, tailored for service members, for a seamless transition.

About MSSA

The MSSA program is expanding from Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington State to Fort Hood, Texas and Camp Pendleton, Southern California.

The program is a full-time, 16-week training course. Participants are assigned to MSSA as their place of duty for the duration of the 16-weeks. MSSA partners with local universities and MS Learning to provide excellent education and practical application. In addition to taking course classes, students receive mentoring and interview/resume prep. Upon successful completion of the program, service members are given the opportunity to interview with Microsoft and other partner companies. Coursework is covered by the Veteran's Affairs GI Bill.

  • Active duty status with a Separation date at least one month after the class end date.
  • Command authorization to participate
  • Copy of service record for Ed. Center
  • Current honorable service status
  • Resume
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Successful completion of High School Algebra and/or a CLEP/Compass Algebra score of 31+
  • ASVAB Scores: MM 100+/GT 100+
  • ASVAB Composite General Score of 50+, Mechanical Score of 40+; Electrical Score of 28+ (Air Force)

  • Strong math skills
  • Computer skills
  • Experience or interest in software or application development

As the site for the pilot program for MSSA, Joint-Base Lewis McChord pioneered the path for future cohorts around the country. Joint Base Lewis-McChord partners with St. Martin’s University, the Armed Forces Continuing Education System and Launch Consulting to ensure a smooth and exceptional training experience.
