AI for Good: Fred Werner's Journey Towards an Ethical and Sustainable Future

In the latest season of Navigating Abroad, filmed at the World Artificial Intelligence Cannes Festival (WAICF), Launch had the chance to speak with Fred Werner from the United Nations' International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and AI For Good. Fred shared how artificial intelligence (AI) is being used to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), providing a clearer understanding of how technology can contribute to global betterment.

The Core Mission of AI for Good

The ITU focuses on three primary areas:

  • Coordinating global digital resources
  • Developing international standards
  • Helping developing countries improve their ICT infrastructure

Within this framework, AI for Good stands as a significant initiative, aiming to use AI to solve some of the world's most pressing challenges. As we face the integration of generative AI into society, AI for Good has become more relevant, tackling the ethical, technical, and strategic aspects of AI deployment in relation to the SDGs.

The 2024 AI for Good Summit

The 2024 AI for Good Summit is poised to address urgent global issues such as climate change, healthcare, and education, along with the specific challenges presented by AI, including job displacement and ethical decision-making. The summit, supported by a community of 25,000 individuals from 183 countries, emphasizes collaboration and innovation through the ITU's Neural Network platform.

The Summit emphasizes important projects such as machine learning challenges and the Innovation Factory startup competition, both aimed at developing actionable AI solutions for a range of problems. Furthermore, ITU's role in establishing international technical standards guarantees that these AI solutions are practical and adhere to ethical guidelines.

Bridging Ideas with Real-World Solutions

A notable update to this year's summit is the introduction of an AI Governance Day, indicating a shift towards actionable outcomes. This addition reflects a growing awareness of the ethical considerations AI brings and the global effort to ensure AI's responsible use.

Fred advises leaders and innovators to align with the SDGs and embed ethical considerations into AI development and application. The need to move from discussing challenges to implementing real-world solutions is increasingly apparent as AI develops.

A Call for Collective Action

Fred’s insights highlight the vast potential of AI to positively transform our world. Yet, this vision also demands a collaborative commitment to steer AI's evolution in a direction that aligns with global sustainability ambitions and ethical guidelines. Our discussion with Fred reiterates the promise of AI to improve our global landscape. Yet, it underscores the need for a unified endeavor to guide AI's growth and use in harmony with worldwide sustainability objectives and moral principles.

As we approach this new era, AI for Good invites everyone to consider how thoughtfully applied technology can be a powerful force for achieving a sustainable, equitable, and prosperous world for all.
